The Black Tavern

A rare screening of one of the best and most criminally underseen Shaw Brothers martial arts films of the early 1970s

On a snowy night, a colourful collection of thieves and murderers gather at a remote tavern to rob a visiting corrupt official in this criminally underseen Shaw Brothers classic. A gleefully dark spin on King Hu’s Dragon Inn, the film sees Teddy Yip subverting the genre at every step with a non-stop barrage of devious plot twists, Hitchcockian character reversals and stunningly imaginative kung fu action that mark it as one of the very best wuxia of the early 1970s.
