Tiger on the Beat

After reinventing martial arts cinema and choreography at the Shaw Brothers in the 1970s, Lau Kar-Leung turned his hand to contemporary action in the late 80s with the hugely popular Tiger on the Beat. Boosted by the star power of Chow Yun-Fat and featuring a cast of famous kung fu genre faces including Ti Lung, David Chiang and Gordon Liu, the film mixes Lethal Weapon-style cop thrills with Hong Kong genre madness to hugely entertaining effect.

Chow Yun-Fat is at his best as a streetwise veteran cop whose comfortable life is turned upside down when he finds himself partnered with Conan Lee’s overly-enthusiastic rookie. With the two already at each other’s throats things erupt into chaos when they’re charged with solving the murder of a drug dealer, leading to shootouts, car chases, over the top stunts and a wild chainsaw duel that needs to be seen to be believed.
