Dealing with themes of memory, guilt and imagination, Patrick Leung’s science fiction drama was the big winner at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards, taking home Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song. Shot in 2019 and then delayed due to issues behind the scenes, the film has been hailed as one of the best from Hong Kong in recent years, its message now even more relevant than ever.
Based on a famous Hong Kong urban legend, Ciao UFO tells the coming-of-age tale of four childhood friends living in Wah-Fu Estate in the golden 1980s. After witnessing a mysterious extra-terrestrial event, their life changes drastically, and circumstances see them drifting away from each other. Years later the friends, now in their late twenties and each struggling in their own way, must face the events of the past which shaped their adult lives as they try to move forward and to heal the bond between them.
